Seasons is an artist-run contemporary photography gallery started in 2024 in Los Angeles, California. We are currently located in Chinatown at 422 Ord St (2nd Floor) along with our friends The Fulcrum Press, Gene’s Dispensary, and Leroy’s Happy Place.

Statement
The past is a gaseous state and these photographs the residue. Atmospheric moods add up to a loose narrative in my pictures, more slivers than a complete arc. The people around me are without armor. We are naked, dreamy, self conscious, heavy with desire, awkward, watchful, alone, or wound up with one another. Sometimes there is a room around us, sometimes there is only weather, ground, sky, or another body. The title comes from Auden: “If equal affection cannot be, /Let the more loving one be me.” I used to think this impulse was my greatest liability, this chronic habit of giving away more of myself than is safe or smart. I now realize it is a strength. It is how I see. I am not interested in making intimacy look fair or orderly. Someone wants more. Someone tells too much. Someone stays too late. Someone remembers the afternoon differently. I do not stand apart from the people I photograph. I am in these pictures too. I ask nothing of their skin that I have not asked of my own. Nakedness is not the subject; it is what makes the encounter possible.
Bio
Malerie Marder received her B.A. in History and Art from Bard College and her M.F.A. from Yale University, where she was awarded the Schickle-Collingwood Prize and the John Ferguson Weir Award.
Her solo exhibitions include presentations at Leslie Tonkonow Artworks + Projects, Salon 94, and Greenberg Van Doren in New York; Blain|Southern, Maureen Paley Gallery, and The
Photographer’s Gallery in London; and No Moon LA in Los Angeles.

Collection, Washington, D.C.; the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; the Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, Washington; The Tang Museum of Art, Saratoga Springs, New York; The Hessel Museum of Art, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York; the Mint Museum, Charlotte, North Carolina; and the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut, among others.
She has published two monographs: Carnal Knowledge (Violette Editions, 2011), surveying work from 1996 to 2007 with texts by James Ellroy, Charlotte Cotton, A.M. Homes, Bruce Wagner, James Frey, Gregory Crewdson, and Philip-Lorca diCorcia; and Anatomy (Twin Palms, 2013), comprising work made in the Netherlands from 2008 to 2013.
Her work has been featured in publications including Artforum, ArtReview, Art in America, The New Yorker, T Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, British Vogue, AnOther, Parkett, and Purple Magazine, among others.
In 2019, Marder received a grant from the Peter S. Reed Foundation and was named to The New Yorker’s best photography of the year list — an honor repeated in 2020. Her work was also included in Sophie Calle’s Guernica at the Musée Picasso, Paris, October 2023–January 2024. She lives and works in New York.
